Jurisdiction
Australia has a number of pieces of Commonwealth Legislation in relation to Petroleum and Minerals Exploration, which may be found at the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism offshore petroleum legislation regulation and guidelines page. As well as Commonwealth Legislation, there is also State and Territory Legislation concerning Mineral, Petroleum, and Geothermal exploration and mining. This, and other issues have initiated the formation of forums such as the Standing Council on Energy and Resources (SCER). The SCER was established by the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) in 2011 to:
- progress consistent upstream petroleum administration and regulation standards
- address issues affecting investment in resources exploration and development
- develop a nationally consistent approach to clean-energy technology
- promote efficiency and investment in generation and networks
- build on Australia's resilience to energy-supply shocks.
